StarTale Life Beats LG_IM Mvp for 2012 GSL Season 4 Championship
Against all odds, StarTale Life defeated LG_IM Mvp in the GSL Grand Finals, breaking records and becoming the youngest StarCraft II player ever to with the GSL.
The Global StarCraft II League crowned young Zerg player
Lee “Life” Seung Hyun as the 2012 GSL Season 4 Champion on Saturday after defeating four-time returning champion
Jung “Mvp” Jong Hyun in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea.
Life’s 4:3 victory made history twice in one match. At just 15 years old, the middle school student is now the youngest GSL Code S player to win the championship. A feat at his age has drawn a likeness to legendary Brood War player
Lee “Flash” Young Ho, also known for his victories at about the same age.
Aside from his age, his status as a GSL Code S newcomer has awarded him the title of “Royal Roader,” referring to winning a tournament after qualifying for it for the first time. Life is now the first StarCraft II player to accomplish this.
“If my parents hadn’t allowed me to be a progamer, I wouldn’t be in this place right now,” Life said when asked about his parents, who were in the audience. “I’m very thankful.” When asked about what a 15 year old will do with the 50,000,000 ₩ ($45,276, €34,662) he said he had nowhere to put it and will instead give it to his parents.
Life’s opponent, the Terran superstar “Mvp,” is repeatedly referred to as StarCraft II’s best player, with the most GSL championships won (four), the most points in the GSL, an assortment of foreign championships and the second most prize money won (behind
Jang “MC” Min Chul). A viewer poll prior to the grand finals showed a 68.6% confidence in Mvp’s victory.
The seven games consisted of similar unit compositions on both sides, with Mvp using early blue flame Hellions in anticipation of Life’s stylistic heavy use of Zerglings and Banelings. He transitioned to mechanical units in all seven games, making no use whatsoever of Marauders or Mespanacs.
In response to these tactics, Life spawned clouds of Corruptors and Brood Lords and used quick ground units and strong creep spread to make opportunistic attacks on pockets of Thors and Siege Tanks as they became vulnerable.
Confidence, another of Life’s signatures, was visibly present in his booth as he laughed through losses and cheered triumphantly after wins.
“Thanks to everyone who came to watch me," Life said after his victory. "I will do my best to show you great games in the future.”
