News:
Evil Geniuses and Team Liquid to Co-Host English Proleague Stream
KeSPA's Proleague, an old Korean StarCraft II team tournament, has finally opened its doors to the rest of the world when it gave eSports organizations Evil Geniuses and Team Liquid rights to cast their games in English.
Though Korean gamers have been in the international StarCraft spotlight for years in international tournaments and more recently the GSL, there’s been one big piece of the pie missing from the rest of the world’s plate. That is until now, when two of the most prominent eSports companies are partnering to bring English broadcasts to a league that was once broadcasted exclusively in Korean.
Late last week, international eSports companies Evil Geniuses and Team Liquid announced that they have acquired the rights to stream Proleague, a Korean team league under the Korean eSports Association (KeSPA), while adding English commentary.
Casters will not be physically present in the studio as the games commence, but will instead receive live feed from Proleague with the Korean commentators’ voices removed. The English casters will then commentate on the matches while streaming on TwitchTV in real time.
The addition of English commentators isn’t the only major change Proleague is undergoing this season, which started last Saturday. Prior to this season, Proleague featured StarCraft: Brood War rather than its successor StarCraft II. This season is also the first ever to feature foreign (non-Korean) participants. Evil Geniuses-Team Liquid entering as one team named “EG-Liquid” with players from both. Though six of the ten players on the roster are Korean nationals, the international status of the teams themselves show a new openness for KeSPA.
Though the commentating roster is "likely to see a healthy rotation" according to a statement on teamliquid.net, four professionals have appeared on this week's schedule. They include
John "TotalBiscuit" Bain,
Ben "Mr. Bitter" Nichol,
Dario "TLO" Wünsch and
Michael "Adebisi" Van Driel.
For those of us who can't understand any Korean (let alone "Battlecruiser") you can tune in to the English stream of the current Proleague now and follow the current season, which is on its second week and will last until an unspecified date in 2013.
