IEM Cologne 2012

A small recap of StarCraft 2 at IEM Cologne 2012.

With IEM Cologne 2012 closing its doors, we take a look at how the 24 StarCraft 2 players fared who qualified through regional qualifiers and the 8 fighting through the Open Bracket to take a shot at glory and fame.

From the Open Bracket, 7 of the 8 possible slots were taken up by Koreans, the exception being Grubby. Paired against Mvp early on, lost, but fought his way through the loser's bracket to qualify for the group stages, but was not able to progress out of Group C. NaNiWa was eliminated in Round 1 of the winner's and loser's bracket, surprising many as he had posted great results in the GSL. With Bomber, viOLet, MC, SuperNova and Mvp in the Quarterfinals, it could have been an all-Korean affair, but Nerchio and VortiX played their heart's out and crushed MC and ForGG 3-0. Nerchio, winner of the last HomeStoryCup, was able to make it all the way to the Finals where he would eventually meet LG-IM Mvp. Mvp's teammate LG-IM NesTea, a fan favorite looked solid, but losing 3-0 to Kas put an end to his title aspirations.

Losing the first game, Mvp never looked back and won the tournament with the next three games, taking no chances. A patient, defensive Terran knowing when to attack, harass and sit tight combined with superb unit positioning resulted in glorious battles, in typical Mvp fashion, making it look easy. Losing only one match the entire tournament and dropping a mere 3 maps from the Ro12 onwards he was in fine form. The player with the most GSL titles has now added an IEM trophy to his cabinet and will return to Korea with $6,500. Struggling with wrist problems and losing to TSL Polt in Round 1 of the 2012 WCS Korea Nationals, eventually withdrawing from the competition altogether, it seems that he made the right decision and proved yet again that he is one of the toughest Terran opponents and certainly one of the best players in the world. We look forward to seeing more games from him this year, hopefully he will take the time to travel to MLG and other International events.

Terran and Zerg were out in full force as Protoss struggled as the tournament progressed, once again SK.MC represented Aiur in the Quarterfinals, but just like at HomeStoryCup early this year, Nerchio was able to defeat his opponent. Given the recent success of LG-IM Seed, winner of GSL Season 3, leading his team to victory at TAC3 and now tearing through 2012 WCS Korea, it's only a matter or time before the team will send him to International events. Although Mvp took home the title, it appears that the European player's, especially Zerg have closed the gap, some of the other foreigners have also done well and as the year progresses the trend 'should' continue in this fashion. VortiX, an unknown to many played very great games, with a bit more tournament experience and practice he should be a formidable adversary in near future. Nerchio has solidified his position as one of the top European players. elfi and Feast showed solid play and it will be interesting to see who will carry the torch for the non-Korean's next time around.

A great tournament, with amazing games showcased by some of the best players from around the world. As HoTS is nearing completion we shall see how the rest of the year plays out.

Top 3:

Mvp (T) LG-IM
Nerchio (Z) Team Acer
VortiX (Z) Karont3
