MYM.MVP - 2012 WCS Korean Nationals

With all MYM.MVP players eliminated from the tournament, we take a look at their performances.

Three MYM.MVP players managed to qualify for 2012 WCS Korea, but none were able to make it further than the first round, with the exception of TAiLS What exactly went wrong? DongRaeGu(Z), sC (T) and TAiLS (P) had high expectations going into the tournament, hoping to represent their country at the finals, but ended in far too soon.

MYM.MVP's star, DongRaeGu the Zerg who had been tearing through his opponents has fallen from grace. Paired against Creator Prime in the 1st Round, a tough task, but nothing that DRG could not overcome. The play we saw out of him resembled nothing like the player we had come to know over the past year. The multiple MLG champion and GSL winner, the player who had carried the team from victory to victory in the GSTL was nowhere to be seen. He showed glimpses of brilliance, but it simply did not come together. Falling to the losers bracket he faced one of the KESPA Zerg's, EffOrt. In a dramatic series and one of the most micro intensive ZvZ's in recent memory he was not able to push past his opponent and was eliminated from the tournament to the dismay of his team and fans. We set the stakes high for players of his caliber and when they are not able to live up to them, people are quick to give their opinion on why this might be the case. Without doubt DRG has not shown his play that we have taken for granted.
Though when you look around, players like NesTea, MVP, MC, MarineKing and MMA have fallen into 'slumps' many of these Code S champions fell off the map for weeks, even down to Code A and had to overcome a difficult time in their SC2 career. Most of them have overcome that period and been back on top to win tournaments and championships. DRG is most likely in that period right now and he needs to sit down and think about what has gone wrong over the past weeks and months, fix certain issues that have arisen in his play. One thing is certain, he has what it takes to be the best player in the world, we should not count him out.

Continuing with MYM.MYP_sC. A former Code S semi-finalist, strong macro player and solid play has beaten many great players in the past, but reoccurring health problems have forced this player onto the sidelines over the past months. To the surprise of many, he managed to qualify for 2012 Korea to represent this team and take a shot at representing his country at the finals. However, that dream was short lived. Losing in the first round and dropping to the loser bracket, where he was paired up against none other than Jaedong. The ever improving Broodwar star showcased what we are to expect from KESPA players in the near future and beyond as he made short work of MYM.MYP_sC and settled the score 2-1 in his favor. The premier Terran on MYM.MVP has a wealth of talent and given his recent health troubles which could have ended his career, hopefully he has overcome these and will focus on his training regime. There is no reason why he should not attend the Code A qualifiers for a chance to fight his way back into GSL.

Moving on, MYM.MVP_TAiLS. The player who was able to progress the furthest. Taking out LG-IM_Happy in the first round, in a scrappy series, he faced off against TSL Polt, a Terran who should never be counted out. The difference in skill between the two players was visible in the first match, although TAiLS was able to take a game off Polt, he was outplayed in the other other two and relegated to the losers bracket. Just like his teammates, he was paired against on of the KESPA players, herO. Winning the first game in the PvP match, he opted for two further all-ins, which herO was able to fend off and eliminate the last MYM.MVP from the tournament. TAiLS has the ability to win matches, he lacks the experience compared to some of the players he faced in the tournament. Some of this play was questionable, maybe he was nervous, but there are certain issues in his play which need to be eliminated, however small, they are the difference of being a champion and a player in Code A. Mixing it up is essential as you do not want to become too predictable for your opponents, though winning a tournament cannot be done without going into the late game and playing a macro-oriented style. What he saw from TAiLS was creative and brought him some success, but was not enough to remain in the tournament.

DongRaeGu, sC and TAiLS have the potential and skill to play at the very top, when taking a closer look at each player, we see they have different reasons for not performing as many were hoping. Keeping in mind what we have seen from each player in the past, there are plenty of things we can look forward to. MYM.MVP is one of the best Korean teams and will continue to build on their previous success. Time is the longest distance between two places and sometimes it feels like an eternity when you are not where you want to be.
